Just
40 miles south of Cancun and about 12 miles east
of Playa del Carmen, Cozmel is easily reached
directly by international air service from the
USA and Canada; connecting flights via Mexico
City and Merida; or by hourly ferries from Playa
del Carmen. It’s also a very popular cruise
ship stop, and with all this it’s not surprising
that the little island of Cozumel is ranked as
one of the top ten tourism destinations in the
world!
The town of San Miguel de Cozumel
on the west side of the island is really the only
town, and also of course the center of activity.
Here you’ll find shopping, restaurants,
and nightlife…though none of this on the
scale of Cancun or even Cancun’s ‘little
sister’ Playa del Carmen. During the day
when the cruise ships are in port, San Miguel
is a hustling, bustling place. But when they leave
at the end of the day, everything changes: Cozumel
is a place for those who crave quiet relaxation
on white-sand beaches…a get-away from the
normal hustle and bustle of typical tourism destinations…
a traditional Mexican experience with all the
luxuries available when you desire.
Only a tiny portion of the island has been developed.
A majority of the island is national park or wildlife
preserve, hosting hundreds of types of endemic
creatures winged and otherwise. Mostly covered
by dense jungle or low scrub, Cozumel hides its
past…Mayan ruins remain hidden across the
island. The portions of the island most developed
for visitors are on the west-side beaches, some
north of town but most south of town. Here you’ll
find hotels from small to large, from quaint to
glittering, all world-class destinations. Toward
the southern end of the island are a variety of
reefs that attract scores of divers and snorkelers
daily…the diving here is consistently rated
among the best in the world, and despite costal
damage from Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the diving
community for years has taken good care of the
reefs and therefore they survived amazingly well
and continue to flourish.
